Much of that time is spent planning, ordering materials, preparing the job site, and doing preliminary work.

Homeowners who will be without power for a few hours need to have advance notice.  I tape notices to everyone’s front door two weeks ahead of time and a reminder a day or two before.

A permit from the town also needs to be applied for.  Arrangements must also be made with the power company to disconnect electrical power at the transformer, so the four-gang meter socket replacement can be done safely.

Some of the relevant articles in the National Electrical Code that pertain to a four-gang meter replacement are:

Article 230 Services.

Article 250 Grounding and Bonding.  Specifically 250.28 Main Bonding Jumper, 250.50 Grounding Electrode System, Table 250.66 for Grounding Electrode Conductor Size, 250.92 for Bonding of Services, and 250.118 Types of Grounding Conductors.

Article 300 General Requirements for Wiring Methods and Materials for a four-gang Meter Socket Replacement.

Article 310 Conductors for General Wiring.  Article 310.15 has the wire ampacity tables.

The power company may also have certain requirements that must be met for a four-gang electric meter socket replacement.
