An ivory colored electrical wall switch hanging from a blue plastic switch box by a white wire, a black wire, and a bare copper wire. There is no neutral conductor available here. The white wire is actually the LINE and the black wire is the LOAD for the switch.

A Ceiling Fan Wiring Diagram depicting the fan light controlled by a single pole wall switch while the fan motor is controlled by the fan's built-in pull-chain switch. Power enters the fan-rated ceiling electrical box using a two-conductor cable. Another two-conductor cable goes down to the switch. A new switch wiring installation would require that a neutral conductor be in the switch box.

A Four-Way Switch Wiring Diagram depicting the LINE and the LOAD in two separate switch boxes. A two conductor cable with a grounding conductor supply's power from the source to the first three-way switch. From the first switch a three conductor cable goes to the first four-way switch and then to the next four-way switch and ends at the last three-way switch. The white neutral conductor is spliced through each switch box until it is connected to the white LOAD wire in the two conductor cable that goes to the lighting LOAD or ceiling fan. The black LOAD wire terminates on the 3-way switch common screw terminal. Travelers are connected on the 4-ways according to the manufacturers' instructions.

A Light Switch Wiring Diagram that shows how electrical power enters the ceiling light electrical box and then a two conductor cable is installed to the switch without a neutral conductor. New switch installations are required to have a neutral conductor. Use a three-conductor cable to bring the neutral down to the switch.

An example of a Half Switched Outlet pulled from the wall mounted electrical box with the wires hanging out. The white wire connected to the black wires is feeding power to the wall switch. The black wire from the wall switch is feeding power to half of this outlet. The other half is on at all times. The tab was cut on the other side where the black wires are connected. Whenever a white wire is used as a hot wire, it is supposed to have its color changed.

Three-way switch wiring diagram with the LINE and the LOAD inside separate switch boxes. LINE power is delivered to the first switch by using a two conductor cable with a bare or green equipment grounding conductor. The LINE wire is connected to the COMMON terminal on the 3-way switch. A three conductor cable goes from one switch box to the other switch box. From the second switch box a two conductor LOAD cable goes to the light fixture or ceiling fan. The black LOAD wire is connected to the COMMON switch terminal and the two white neutral wires are simply joined together with a wirenut.
