An example of a Half Switched Outlet pulled from the wall mounted electrical box with the wires hanging out. The white wire connected to the black wires is feeding power to the wall switch. The black wire from the wall switch is feeding power to half of this outlet. The other half is on at all times. The tab was cut on the other side where the black wires are connected. Whenever a white wire is used as a hot wire, it is supposed to have its color changed.

Switched Outlet Wiring Diagrams

LINE power is delivered to the first switch by using a two conductor cable with a bare or green equipment grounding conductor. The LINE wire is connected to the COMMON terminal on the 3-way switch. A three conductor cable goes from one switch box to the other switch box. From the second switch box a two conductor LOAD cable goes to the light fixture or ceiling fan. The black LOAD wire is connected to the COMMON switch terminal and the two white neutral wires are simply joined together with a wirenut.
