It was a reasonably straightforward job because I only needed to install the generator feed wire a short distance along the same inside wall as the Cutler Hammer main electrical panel.

I put the generator inlet outside of the house close to the back door of the garage.

A generator interlock kit installation usually requires an electrical permit from the town and an inspection after completing the work.  Check with your local building department.

Some of the National Electrical Code requirements for a generator installation can be found in the following chapters:

Article 250 Grounding – See 250.34 and 250.35.

Article 300 General Requirements for Wiring Methods and Materials.

Article 445 Generators – Read 445-20 about internal bonding on portable generators.  An interlock kit installation with a portable standby generator for a home should not have an internal ground/neutral bond because that connection is made inside the main electrical panel.  Only generators used exclusively as the power source such as on a construction site or camping trip should have an internal bond.

Article 702 Optional Standby Systems – See 702.11.

Article 708 Critical Operations Power Systems – Most of you will not need this Article, but 708.20(F) might be helpful.

My article here shows you more details about this generator interlock kit installation.
